Most of the housing stock in Everett, Marysville, and Lake Stevens was built between the 1950s and the 1990s. Many kitchen remodels therefore run into the same three things: a wall that turns out to be load-bearing, plumbing and electrical that no longer meet code once exposed, and a footprint designed for a household that cooked differently than yours does.

Choosing a kitchen contractor in Snohomish County is less about who has the nicest portfolio photos and more about scope. A company built for cabinet-and-countertop refreshes may struggle with a wall removal. A design-build firm set up for full renovations may be more than you need for new doors and a backsplash.

First, which kind of remodel are you doing?

Tier 1, cosmetic refresh. Cabinets stay where they are and get refaced or replaced, plus new countertops, backsplash, sink, and lighting. No walls move and no plumbing relocates.

Tier 2, layout-preserving renovation. Everything comes out down to the studs, but the sink, range, and refrigerator stay roughly in place. New cabinetry, flooring, and finishes usually arrive with electrical brought up to current code.

Tier 3, full renovation with layout change. Walls come down, the island moves, plumbing or gas relocates, and the kitchen opens into adjoining space. This requires permits, structural planning, and coordinated trades.

How we compared companies

We reviewed published service areas, project scope, planning process, local office location, warranty or licensing information displayed online, and whether each company appears set up for cosmetic, full-gut, or structural kitchen work. This is a scope-fit comparison, not a substitute for bids, references, or license verification.

Red flags when hiring a kitchen contractor

A price quoted before inspection. Older Snohomish County homes frequently reveal electrical, plumbing, and structural conditions after cabinets or drywall come out.

No verifiable registration. Washington contractors must be registered. Ask for the number and verify it with the state before paying a deposit.

Vague allowances. “Countertop allowance included” means little without a dollar amount and material grade.

No occupied-home plan. Ask about dust barriers, temporary cooking, and scheduled water or power shutdowns.

The same recommendation for every kitchen. The scope should fit the house rather than one fixed package.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a kitchen remodel take in Snohomish County?

Cosmetic work may take one to three weeks. Full-gut and layout-changing projects usually take longer, with permitting, custom cabinetry, and stone fabrication often driving the schedule.

Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Everett?

Cabinet and countertop replacement may not require a permit. Moving walls, relocating plumbing or gas, and altering electrical circuits commonly do. Confirm the scope with the local authority and state in the contract who pulls each permit.

Can I stay in my house during a kitchen remodel?

Many homeowners do. The answer depends on dust control, utility interruptions, and whether you can create a temporary kitchen elsewhere.

Is design-build worth it for a kitchen?

It can be valuable for Tier 2 and Tier 3 work because one team remains accountable when the design meets framing, plumbing, electrical, and finishes.

Are 3D renderings necessary?

No, but they are an inexpensive place to catch island-clearance, appliance-door, cabinet-run, and window-alignment problems before construction.

Planning new kitchen electrical work?

A remodel may expose an undersized panel, outdated circuits, or missing GFCI/AFCI protection. SPS can assess the electrical scope separately from your remodeling contract.
