  • Hard start delay — the outdoor unit hums for 3-5 seconds before kicking on, or doesn’t kick on at all. Classic capacitor or start-relay symptom, but it stresses the compressor every time it happens.
  • Loud clanking or grinding from the outdoor unit. That’s often a broken internal component rattling inside the shell — not a great sign.

How I Test a Compressor in the Field

I don’t guess. Here’s the sequence:
